Virginia Democrats Add 1 Seat in the GOP-Controlled House

Democrats have picked up one seat in the Republican-controlled House of Delegates.

Unofficial results on election night showed that Democratic Delegate Kathleen Murphy was leading the race for the House District 34 seat by fewer than 200 votes. But the race remained too close to call Tuesday evening.

Republican candidate Craig Parisot said in an email to supporters Thursday that he has reviewed the results and found no reason to contest the outcome. He said he called Murphy and encouraged her to do her best to represent the interests of the entire district.

The district covers parts of Fairfax and Loudon Counties.

That means Democrats now control 34 seats in the House, one more than the party did last session. Republicans still hold a firm majority with 66 seats.
