A bank robbery suspect briefly escaped custody in Virginia Tuesday by slipping out of his handcuffs and freeing himself from a police cruiser, Fairfax County Police said.
About 4:45 p.m. Tuesday, a man walked into a bank in the 6800 block of Old Dominion Drive in McLean, showed a handgun and demanded cash, police said. He took the money and drove away in a gray pickup truck.
Just before 5 p.m., officers spotted a man matching the description of the robber in a gray 2007 Toyota Tundra at Anderson Drive and Dolley Madison Boulevard and took him into custody, police said.
Officers took 25-year-old Hao The Dinh of Manassas to police headquarters, where he got out of the back of the police cruiser by slipping out of his handcuffs and reaching through a partially open window to open the door from the outside, police said.
Dinh tried to carjack a delivery truck driver, implying he had a gun, but officers caught up with him and took him back into custody, police said.
Slipping out of handcuffs is rare but not impossible, police said.
No one was injured in the bank robbery or the attempted carjacking, police said.
