Video Shows Suspect in Northeast DC Gas Station Killing

Newly released video shows a suspect wanted for killing a 68-year-old clerk at a gas station in Northeast D.C.

Nazir Ahmad, of Laurel, Maryland, was shot and killed Saturday, police said.

Surveillance video D.C. police released Thursday shows the suspect wearing a black hooded jacket, red baseball cap, and ripped jeans walk into the Valero gas station in the 900 block of Brentwood Road NE.

Nazir's coworker, Mohamed Hegazy, previously told News4 the gunman had been hiding outside the gas station until about 6 a.m., when Ahmad stepped away to use the restroom.

He was about to end his shift and thought the door was locked, Hegazy said.

Ahmad returned when the suspect went inside the store and grabbed the cash box, according to Hegazy.

The gunman pushed Ahmad into a back room, Hegazy said, and shot him. Then he shut the door and ran away.

Video shows the suspect trying to leave with the cash box, apparently having difficulty opening the door to get out. He then shoots the glass door to escape.

"To have someone killed and take his life for this amount of money... I don't know. It's not right," Hegazy said.

Police responded to a call for the sound of gunshots.

Ahmad was unconscious, not breathing and suffering from multiple gunshot wounds, police say. Ahmad was pronounced dead at a hospital.
