Veterans Share Their Stories in Operation Homecoming

D.C. resident Carolyn Schapper spent a year collecting intelligence for the U.S. military in Iraq. She acquired something else, too - a small rabbit with singed whiskers she called Combat Infantry Bunny, or CIB. Schapper says the bunny became her best friend in Iraq. When her base was hit with mortars, her thoughts turned immediately to CIB. And when the bunny fell prey to a fox, she gave him a soldier’s burial. But Schapper said the bunny lives on in the e-mails she wrote, which she has been sharing with fellow veterans in a free writing class sponsored by the National Endowment for the Arts. Since 2004, with support from The Boeing Company, Operation Homecoming has collected the stories of thousands of military personnel and their families. Jessica Gould reports …
