Vandals Fire on National Museum of the Marine Corps

A museum dedicated to the U.S. Marines Corps documents many situations in which Marines faced hostile fire from enemy fighters. Rarely, however, does the museum find itself in a hot zone.

Some time on Saturday night, vandals fired on the National Museum of the Marine Corps and Heritage Center. They struck several glass panels, but none of the museum's artifacts were affected.

Police responded to a report on Sunday afternoon that someone had fired on the Triangle, Va., museum overnight. Museum director Lin Ezell said that five or six glass panels were ruined.

A harrier jet hangs in the vicinity of the place where the bullets struck the building, but the jet was not damaged.

Ezell said that the glass panels are expensive and that the museum must commission a Texas glassmaker to replace them.
