Va. To Announce School Accreditation Rate

The number dropped last year

Virginia education officials are set to announce how many public schools met enough of the state's benchmarks to be fully accredited.

The number dropped last year as the state imposed tougher standards that require high schools to account for graduation and completion.

This year, required pass rates in some subject areas were increased, and education officials predicted accreditation rates would continue to fall.

Last year, the number of accredited schools dropped to 96 percent from 98 percent.

For full accreditation, 70 percent of students in each middle- and high school must pass all four Standards of Learning subject areas. High schools also get judged on graduation rates.
