Va. Stimulus Fight Enters Governor's Race

McAuliffe, McDonnell spar over rejection of federal unemployment insurance funds

The Virginia House of Delegates enraged Governor Tim Kaine

And since it's an election year in Virginia, the refrain from Democrats is predictable: GOP candidate Bob McDonnell hates the poor! Vote for the anti-Bob McDonnell!

"Bob McDonnell and his Republican allies still don't get that Virginians are hurting," said state Sen. R. Creigh Deeds of Bath County, who voted for the plan at the General Assembly session Wednesday.

Deeds and fellow Democratic hopefuls Terry McAuliffe and former Del. Brian J. Moran of Alexandria supported the unemployment package.

"Yesterday, Virginia Republicans, led by Bob McDonnell, turned their backs on Virginia families and communities facing record unemployment rates and unprecedented economic challenges," McAuliffe said.

Granted Bob McDonnell did not cast a vote Wednesday, since he is not in the legislature, but he does agree with the Republican line: that accepting the money would "saddle businesses and taxpayers with a significant unfunded federal mandate that will hurt our long-term ability to create new jobs and grow the economy."

Well, the state will be broke one way or another.
