Va. Gov. Signs Bill Allowing Moms to Breastfeed in Public

Moms in Virginia will soon be legally allowed to breastfeed their babies in public places.

The bill, which assures mothers that they can breastfeed anywhere where they are lawfully present, was previously passed in the General Assembly. Virginia Gov. Terry McAuliffe signed that bill into law Monday.

It will take effect July 1.

A Fairfax mother of three who is also a lawyer helped push for the change.

Prior to the signing of the law, women in Virginia were allowed to "breastfeed on any land or property owned by the state," according to National Conference of State Legislatures.

The governor of South Dakota also recently signed a public breastfeeding bill into law.

There is now only one state -- Idaho -- where moms can't legally breastfeed in public.
