Agriculture officials are asking Virginia consumers to include locally grown products in their weekly food budgets.
The Virginia Department of Agriculture and Consumer Services on Thursday announced the $10 Buy Local Challenge.
The department cites research by the Virginia Cooperative Extension that shows $1.65 billion would be added to the local economy annually if every Virginia household bought $10 worth of locally grown food and beverages a week.
Other partners in the challenge are the Virginia Farm Bureau Federation, Virginia Cooperative Extension Service, Buy Fresh Buy Local - Virginia and the Virginia Food System Council's members.
