VDOT Proposes $1/Month Fee For E-ZPass Users

Possible $1/Month Fee for E-ZPass Users

Virginia drivers who have an E-ZPass may soon have to pay a monthly fee for the device.

According to the Richmond Times, the Virginia Department of Transportation wants to charge a $1 monthly fee beginning July 1.

With the anticipated increased number of accounts, transponders and electronic tolls, administrative costs are expected to increase as well.

To get an E-ZPass transponder, drivers have to buy the $25 device along with a $35 initial prepayment. Under the proposal the $25 deposit fee would be dropped for those who don't do automatic reload, News4's Julie Carey reported.

Word of the new fee came in a meeting with the Commonwealth Transportation Board. There was no prior public comment.

The fee is one of various fee structures being evaluated, VDOT said. The Commonwealth Transportation Board will seek public comment before making a final decision.

So, will E-ZPass users be charged the $1 fee? Stay tuned.
