VDOT Points Finger at DC After Morning Traffic Jam

WASHINGTON -- A lack of communication between Virginia and D.C.'s respective DOTs may have made a Thursday morning traffic jam worse than it had to be.

A crash closed all lanes in the Third Street Tunnel and caused traffic delays for hours on interstates 395 and 95 from the 14th Street Bridge to Dale City.

DDOT spokesman John Lisle told InsideNoVA.com that they notified VDOT about 20 minutes after the crash was reported at 6:23 a.m., but VDOT spokesman Mike Salmon said they didn't receive notification until after 7 a.m.

Had VDOT known sooner, they could have better informed drivers about the situation.

DDOT did the best they could under the circumstances, Lisle told InsideNoVA.com.

"Anytime you have a crash that closes all the lanes of a highway, no matter what time you report it, it is going to cause a back up," he said.
