University of Mary Washington Cancels Classes After Threat

Classes and events for the afternoon and evening were canceled "out of an abundance of caution"

The University of Mary Washington cancelled Monday afternoon and evening classes after receiving a threat.

Posts to an official Twitter account of the Fredericksburg, Virginia, school said students were advised to shelter in place. The university received a threat saying someone "would be coming to campus with a firearm."

Classes and events for the afternoon and evening were canceled "out of an abundance of caution," the posts at about 2 p.m. said.

The shelter-in-place order had been lifted by about 3 p.m. A suspect faces criminal charges. 

There "was never a credible threat" to the campus, the school said.
