ANNAPOLIS, Md. -- A campaign to convince Maryland legislators to approve a deal to bring D.C. United to Prince George's County crashed lawmakers servers, Gazette.net reported.
The county and the team worked on a plan to build a soccer stadium, but Maryland's House and Senate still must approve a bill allowing the Maryland Stadium Authority to negotiate with the team. A D.C. United request that the county sell bonds to help pay for the stadium concerns some lawmakers.
Team president Kevin Payne posted a plea for soccer fans to let lawmakers know they want the stadium, Gazette.net reported. It included a link to a form that sends a message to all members of the House Appropriations Committee and the Senate Budget & Taxation Committee.
According to the team, 28,000 e-mails from all over the world were sent through the team's site, and servers crashed under the volume.
Legislators told the Gazette that's a bigger reaction than they've received on issues like the death penalty, taxes and slots.
Regardless, many lawmakers said cost is the concern and the e-mail campaign won't sway their decision when they vote on the bills, Gazette.net reported.
