UDC Plans to Ax Undergrad Education Major

UDC president wants to raise standards

The University of the District of Columbia plans to cut its struggling undergraduate education department.

It's one of several changes proposed by UDC President Allen Sessoms in hopes of raising standards at the school.

The undergraduate education department typically graduates 7 to 8 percent of enrolled students within six years.

The graduation rate is low because many students can't pass a national standardized test of basic high school skills, professors said.

Sessoms wants to replace the undergraduate program with a master's degree program focused on urban education.
