Teens Set the Fires But Had No Murder-Plot Pact

Update: Yonata Getachew was sentenced to probation before judgment, which he has completed, his attorney tells News4.

Two Montgomery County teenagers were convicted of setting two small fires at their school but will not be charged with conspiring to kill the principal.

Yonata Getachew, 18, pleaded guilty on Friday in adult court to several charges, including arson. The other student, 17-year-old Anthony Torrence (who was identified in the Washington Post), received 100 hours of community service.

Both boys were arrested in April and originally accused of plotting to kill their principal with a nail bomb and set off a large explosion inside Springbrook High School in White Oak, Md., according to the Washington Post.

But prosecutors later dropped conspiracy charges after both boys denied there was an agreement to hurt the principal.

The teens set one of those fires by lighting papers and another by spraying lighter fluid in both a bathroom and locker room at the school. Neither fire lasted long, according to the paper.

Getachew's sentencing was set for October. He faces up to two years in jail.
