Three people were shot in Alexandria, Virginia Thursday afternoon, less than a half-mile from where Rep. Steve Scalise and three others were shot at a congressional baseball team practice last month.
The shooting occurred Thursday afternoon on the 400 block of E. Howell Avenue, Alexandria police said around 1 p.m.
A man who lives in the residential neighborhood, Del Ray, said he heard at least nine shots.
"This is crazy, and this is not Del Ray," another neighbor said.
A third resident took a photo of medics helping at least two men.
Three people were taken to hospitals with non-life threatening injuries. Police later identified them as a 19-year-old woman, a 21-year-old man and a 49-year-old man.
A black car that apparently smashed into a silver SUV was towed from the scene.
Police used a helicopter to search for a suspect, who they believe knew the victims.
Police announced later Thursday night a 17-year-old suspect had been arrested and charged with malicious wounding. Police are not identifying the suspect because the person is a juvenile.
During the earlier search for the suspect, three schools were briefly on lock-in status because of the police activity outside: Mount Vernon Community School, Matthew Maury Elementary School and George Washington Middle School. It was not immediately clear if there were students at the schools. The school district's central office also briefly was on a lock-in status.
Police asked people to avoid the area.
Anyone with information for police is asked to call 911 or 703-746-4444.
