Two Killed in Crash in Southern Maryland

Two young children injured

Two people died and six others were hurt in a four-vehicle crash late Friday morning in southern Maryland.

According to Maryland State Police, a car was trying to turn left from Route 231 onto Dicandia Dorsey Place on the Charles County side of the Benedict Bridge over the Patuxent River just after 11:30 a.m.  As the driver waited to turn, a large moving truck rear-ended the car, pushing it onto oncoming traffic, witnesses said.

According to investigators, that car was then hit by at least two other cars.

The driver and passenger in the car that was waiting to turn were killed. State Police identified them as 67-year-old Evelyn Sommer and 83-year-old Franz Sommer, of Benedict, Md.

Four people in other vehicles were hurt, including a one-year-old and a two-month-old.

The extent of their injuries are not known.

The Patuxent River Bridge was closed for more than five hours today while accident reconstruction teams investigated the crash.

So far, police have not filed charges.
