Two Injured in Two-Alarm Fire at D.C. Apartment

At least two people, including a firefighter, were injured in a two-alarm fire in Northeast D.C. Tuesday morning.

Flames shot from the apartment in the 1100 block of Oates Street NE as crews worked to get the blaze under control at about 9:30 a.m.

One firefighter and one civilian suffered serious injuries but are expected to recover.

Ruth Williams, 89, was taken to a hospital after becoming stranded on a staircase with her son. Larry Watson dodged flames and raced through heavy smoke to save her, News4's Pat Collins reported.

The entire four-unit apartment building is occupied by Williams and members of her family.

The cause of the fire is not known at this time.
