Turkey Dinner Costs More Dough This Thanksgiving

Food prices higher across the board

The cost of Thanksgiving Dinner in Virginia is ten percent more this year than last year.

That's what the Virginia Farm Bureau says in a study of current food prices.

A Thanksgiving meal for 10 people, including turkey, stuffing, sweet potatoes, stuffing, and other traditional staples costs $48.03, the Farm Bureau says.  That's $4.46 more than what the same meal cost in 2010.

The higher cost this year is no surprise, agriculture market analyst Jonah Bowles said.  "Most agricultural prices around the world are much more expensive than in 2010," Bowles said. "Add to that a higher transportation expense, and the 11 percent increase over 2010 prices becomes very understandable."

The Virginia Farm Bureau says the average cost of a 16-pound turkey this year is $21.39, or $1.34 per pound.
