Truck Crashes Over Side of Chesapeake Bay Bridge-Tunnel; Crews Search for Driver's Body

Navy divers are working to recover the body of a truck driver whose tractor-trailer crashed through a guardrail on the Chesapeake Bay Bridge-Tunnel before falling into about 26 feet of water.

The driver was traveling north between Virginia Beach and the Eastern Shore of Virginia at the time of the crash Thursday morning.

Maintenance crews were on site and had closed a lane, WAVY.com reported, but the driver didn't see the lane closure quickly enough and swerved, causing the tractor-trailer to jackknife. The tractor-trailer then crashed through a guardrail and into the water, Tom Anderson, deputy director of the Chesapeake Bay Bridge-Tunnel, told WAVY.com.

The driver was heavily entangled in the truck's wreckage underneath the water. The wreckage has drifted into the Chesapeake Bay side of the bridge-tunnel.

Four Navy divers and the Coast Guard are working on the recovery efforts. Police are investigating the cause of the accident.
