Trooper Kills Pit Bull Mix in Midst of Attack

State police say a trooper shot and killed a pit bull mix that had bitten a woman inside her Centreville home and was about to attack her again.

Police say Trooper First Class Robert Isabelle was called to the home shortly after 8 a.m. on Sunday. When he arrived, two dogs were fighting and 64-year-old Doris Airey was trying to break them up.

Police say the trooper used pepper spray on the pit bull mix, which was the aggressor. The dog backed away before charging toward Airey again. That's when Isabelle fired one round that killed the dog.

Police say Airey didn't suffer any further injuries after the initial dog bite. No one else was hurt.

Police say the dog belonged to Airey's son-in-law, who wasn't home at the time.
