Traffic to Chesapeake Bay Bridge Cleared After 16-Mile Delay

Many drivers headed from the beach back to the D.C. area starting Monday afternoon hit major traffic.

Traffic headed westbound to the Chesapeake Bay Bridge from MD-404 was backed up for 16 miles at 6:45 p.m. Monday and gradually diminished. The delay finally had cleared nearly four hours later, at 10:35 p.m., according to the Maryland Transportation Authority.

A truck broke down in the center lane of westbound Route 50 before 6 p.m. Officials stopped traffic entirely as they worked to tow the vehicle to the side of the road.

Eastbound traffic was not delayed.
