The National Weather Service has issued a tornado watch until 10 p.m. for Calvert, Charles and St. Mary's counties in Maryland.
There will be a few thunderstorms throughout the area this afternoon, and some of the storms may be severe with damaging winds and hail between 3 p.m. and 8 p.m., according to meteorologist Tom Kierein.
Warnings were issued in Virginia as severe thunderstorms moved through the state.
Temperatures will be noticeably cooler thanks to an easterly wind, which at times could be quite gusty during the storms.
Rain totals may exceed 2 inches total by late this evening.
