Maryland Doctor, Daughter, Friend Killed in Indiana Plane Crash

A Maryland medical professor, his daughter and a friend died in a small plane crash in southeastern Indiana Saturday evening.

The crash of the single-engine Cessna plane near Oldenburg, Indiana, also killed one dog aboard the craft while a second dog survived after jumping out before impact, Indiana State Police Sgt. Stephen Wheeles said.

Police said the victims were Dr. Louis Cantilena, 63, his daughter, Amy Cantilena, 31, both from Potomac, Maryland, and Paul Schuda, 65, of Arlington, Virginia.

The plane was traveling from Kansas City, Missouri, to Frederick, Maryland, and had taken off from an airport outside Columbus, Indiana, after refueling when it had instrument problems and crashed in a wooded area about 40 miles northwest of Cincinnati, Ohio, about 9 p.m. Saturday.

Wheeles said the Federal Aviation Administration and the National Transportation Safety Board also are investigating.

Louis Cantilena was a professor at the Uniformed Services University of Health Sciences in Bethesda.

"He always had this little twinkle, this little look in the corner of his eye, like, have you got what I said yet?" Department of Medicine Chairman Dr. Louis Pangaro said. "Really smart guy."
