Three Adults Killed in Fire at Group Home in Anne Arundel County

Investigators have identified the three adults who were killed in a fire at a group home Saturday night, the Anne Arundel County Fire Department said.

Walter McCardell, 61, William Garcia, 44, and Barbara Brown, 65, were killed in the fire at a home operated by the Arundel Lodge in Severn, Maryland, fire officials said. McCardell and Garcia were residents at the home; Brown was an employee.

Officials said multiple 911 calls were made just after 10:45 p.m. Saturday. The first crews arrived to find heavy fire coming from the back of the house in the 7900 block of Stone Hearth Road.

People who had already escaped from the home told firefighters arrived that someone was possibly still inside. Firefighters pulled out one person who was declared dead at the scene. Firegfighters found the other two victims on subsequent searches.

Four other occupants escaped unhurt.

It took 45 firefighters from Anne Arundel County, Fort Meade and BWI Thurgood Marshall Airport about an hour to extinguish the blaze, officials said.

The bodies of the victims have been taken for identification and autopsies.

The cause of the fire is not yet known. Investigators are asking anyone with video or pictures of the fire to call them at 410-222-TIPS.

There were working smoke alarms in the home, fire officials said.
