Third Guilty Plea in Murder of D.C. School Principal

A third man has entered a plea in Montgomery County in connection with the shooting death of D.C. school principal Brian Betts.

Joel Johnson, 19, pled guilty Tuesday to being an accessory after the fact in a felony murder. He'll be sentenced Feb. 25 and faces a maximum of five years in prison.

Alante Saunders, who admitted to shooting Betts, was sentenced to 40 years. Sharif Lancaster faces 35 years when he is sentenced in February.

The case against a fourth suspect is still ongoing.

Betts was found dead in his Silver Spring home in April. He was the popular principal of Shaw Middle School at Garnet-Patterson, near 10th and U streets N.W.

Police said the defendants arranged a meeting with Betts through a phone sex chatline.
