Death Becomes Us True Crime Festival

There's a lot of great storytelling and journalism happening in the true crime genre — and a host of the most popular podcasts, authors and figures are descending on D.C. this weekend.

Where else would you get to see Amanda Knox interview the infamous Lorena (Bobbitt) Gallo? Or meet up with Paul Holes, the investigator who helped nab Joseph DeAngelo, a suspected serial killer thought to have committed dozens of rapes and murders over decades?

If you want to send a chill down your spine, the guys from Buzzfeed Unsolved will be live at the Lisner Auditorium on Sunday.

Check out the Friday night preview party and cocktail battle or watch a bartending competition using vendor’s products. DMV Black-Owned Restaurant Week

Make a point to patronize one of the D.C. area's esteemed black-owned establishments during this week highlighting minority owners in the industry. Try out an old favorite or a new spot. Participating restaurants include Appioo Bar & Grill, Ben's Chili Bowl, DCITY Smokehouse, Jordan's Bistro, Hen Quarter and Matchbox locations. "Punk the Capital: Building a Sound Movement in Washington, D.C."
Screenings Saturday, Sunday and Monday

Stage dive into D.C.'s storied history as a capital for hardcore punk. There are five screenings of this 88-minute documentary this weekend, each accompanied by special guests for Q&As.

Smithsonian Food History Weekend

In its fifth year, the Smithonsian Food History Weekend's theme will be Power Through Food. The weekend will be focused on migrant and refugee women and organizations, who will explore community through demonstrations, hands-on learning and conversations. This year's food history festival will feature demonstrations from Salvadoran, Eritrean, Persian cuisine and more.

The Arctic Refuge Experience. Step in. Step Up.

Step into a one-of-a-kind immersive experience at AutoShop. This experience brings you into the Arctic National Wildlife Refuge, one of the last great undeveloped wildernesses in the United States. Projected video, sound and 4D technology will transport you to the Alaskan wilderness. Tickets start at $10, with 100% of proceeds going to the Gwich’in Steering Committee and Gwich’in Youth Council, a native group who considers the land to be sacred.

The Nao Santa Maria
Nov. 7-13 and 15-17, 10 a.m.-6 p.m.
The Wharf

The Nao Santa Maria, a replica of one of the three ships sailed across the ocean on Christopher Columbus's expedition to American, is coming to Washington for 10 days. The full-scale reconstruction will be docked at The Wharf, where you can buy tickets to tour the ship and learn more about how Spanish sailors lived 500 years ago. Tickets are $10 for those ages 11 and up and $5 for kids.

Opening Weekend for Ice Skating - Canal Park Ice Rink

The ice has officially been broken at Canal Park! This rink in Capitol Riverfront is open from November through February. A variety of group rates and multi-visit passes are available on their website, so be sure to do your research to find the best deal. Regulat tickets are $9 for adults and $8 for children and seniors, and skate rentals are $5 each.

George Washington Whiskey Festival

You’ll find history and whisky at the first George Washington Whiskey Festival. Enjoy some of the finest drinks from 12 Virginia craft distillers and whiskey producers while listening to distillery stories. Expert panelists will discuss the history of distilling reaching as far back as the 1700s. Food and nonalcoholic beverages are available — especially for designated drivers. General Admission tickets cost $85.

Alexandria invites you to welcome the cooler weather with a 1770s-style event during their Fall Harvest Ball at Gadsby’s Tavern Museum. Try your hand at English country dancing to live music. Take advantage of the Tavern’s dance classes before the event so you can keep up during the event. Tickets are $45 a person.

Science Comedy Night- Women in STEM edition

The DC Comedy Loft is bringing some of the sharpest minds in science for this unique comedy night organized with Bier Baron Tavern. Andrea Jones-Rooy of FiveThirtyEight, Maryam Zaringhalam of Story Collider, and award-winning science communicator Liz Landau will be featured. Doors open at 7 p.m. and the show begins at 8. Tickets are $12.

Pacers Veteran's Day 10k & Walk

Pacers, the running store with locations throughout the area, is hosting its Veteran's Day 10K and Walk in West Potomac Park Monday. Sign up for the 10k if you're ready to run, or the 2 mile walk if you're just trying to get moving. The races cost $20-45, and come with freebies like a medal and long sleeve tee.
