The Water Overfloweth in Crystal City

Water main breaks lead to road closures, leading to backups

There was water main break after water main break after water main break Tuesday night in Crystal City.

Officials said the breaks were caused by a mix of old pipes and a malfunctioning water pressure regulator. Each of the breaks happened on 12-inch water mains within blocks of one another.

The first was on Jefferson Davis Highway at 23rd Street. Then there was another on Jefferson Davis in the 2600 block between Airport Viaduct and 27th Street South.

A third break in the 2900 block of South Eads was still bubbling water Wednesday morning as Arlington County water crews waited for the gas company to close a line so they could repair the leak.

While the leaks on Jefferson Davis Highway were repaired just before morning rush, additional road repairs mean the roads will remain at least partially closed for most of the day.
