Cancer Victim Beaten, Robbed

Fredericksburg.com: "A man who is in the latter stages of cancer was robbed of his rent money and his medication during a home-invasion robbery yesterday in Fredericksburg, police said. The victim, who is in his early 40s, lives on the ground floor of a home in the 300 block of Altoona Drive, city police spokeswoman Natatia Bledsoe said. About 5:45 p.m., someone knocked on the door leading to his living area. When the victim opened the door, he was greeted by a man pointing a gun in his face and two other males wearing masks. One of the masked men had a collapsible baton similar to the ones used by police officers, Bledsoe said. The trio came inside and demanded money and medications, police said. The victim refused initially and was hit several times with the baton in the head, back and torso."

Boy Dies From ‘Brain-Eating Amoeba’ in Va.

Richmond Times-Dispatch: "The Virginia Department of Health does not know — and may never know — from which body of water a Virginia child contracted a deadly infection from an amoeba. "In all likelihood, we're never going to pinpoint exactly where this amoeba was acquired," said Dr. Keri Hall, the state epidemiologist. Her department received results from an autopsy Friday that confirmed the cause of death as primary amoebic meningoencephalitis, which is caused by Naegleria fowleri. She said the amoebas, which swim up the nose and enter the brain, live in freshwater bodies around the world."

Spray Paint Bandit Hits Up to 27 Country Club Cars

Loudoun Times : "Leesburg Country Club residents started their work week scrubbing spray paint off their car doors on the morning of Aug. 15. Residents on Janney Street were angered and shocked to see the ‘XO’ tag on their driver’s side doors. “I was too busy milking cows when I was their age,” one resident said regarding the kids he suspected of doing the tags. Leesburg Police were surveying the area around 8 a.m. and have totaled 27 reports of vandalism in the area. There were also reports of Chancellor Street in Leesburg Country Club being hit by the ‘XO’ vandals."
