Graduation Brawl Leads to Arrests

Numerous fights erupted outside of the Fredericksburg Expo & Conference Center after entry was denied to a graduation party being held there. Fredericksburg Police were called to the expo center in Celebrate Virginia about 11:45 p.m. Friday for reports of a large and unruly crowd in the parking lot and inside the facility, said City police spokeswoman Natatia Bledsoe . Bledsoe said the expo center was being rented out that night for a graduation party for three James Monroe High School graduates. She said things got out of hand when the facility reached maximum capacity and security stopped letting people in. (Fredericksburg.com)

Spies Among Us

Ten people, including three from Virginia, have been arrested for allegedly serving as secret agents of the Russian government with the goal of penetrating U.S. government policymaking circles. The Justice Department announced the arrests Monday. A spokesman for the U.S. attorney's office says the three individuals from Virginia made their initial appearance early Monday afternoon in U.S. District Court in Alexandria, Va. The hearing was closed because at that point the case had not yet been unsealed in New York. (Washington Times/AP)

Man Arrested for Taking Home Bear Cub

A Frostburg man faces charges of possessing a live black bear after Maryland Natural Resources Police found a 20-pound cub in his home. Sgt. Art Windemuth says 34-year-old Dwayne Lee Ritchey has acknowledged taking home the animal after he and his 19-year-old stepson found it in the Savage River State Forest. (Washington Post)

Metro Fares Up, Ridership Down

Are Metro riders ditching the system because of new, higher fares? The transit agency says compared to previous Monday's for this month, ridership this Monday morning was down about 20,000. However, Metro does say it is too early to determine if the decline is due to the higher fares, or if it's because more people on vacation. (WTOP)

Maryland Has New Tags

The new Maryland license plates, intended to be a celebration of the bicentennial of the War of 1812, seem to be sparking some conflict of their own. The Maryland Motor Vehicle Administration unveiled the new standard-issue license plates recently in Glen Burnie, and motorists seem to either love them or hate them. (Hometown Annapolis)
