Student Shot Outside Northeast DC School

A teenage boy was shot in the abdomen outside his Northeast D.C. charter school, police and school officials say.

The shooting occurred on 45th Street Northeast, outside the IDEA Public Charter School, police said. The teen was shot across the street from the school and ran back to the school for help, police said. The school confirmed the victim was a student in a statement released Tuesday 

The boy was shot about 3:50 p.m., police say. He his wound is not life threatening.

Police haven't released details about the shooter.

Principal Nicole McCrae says the school will hold an assembly Wednesday to "discuss the importance of ensuring prompt and timely safe passage home."

The school is also adjusting its arrival and dismissal processes. School doors will open as early as 7:30 a.m., and a shuttle bus will pick students up from nearby Metro stations from 7:30 a.m. until 9 a.m. An afternoon shuttle bus will take students back to Metro stops. 

Counselors will also be available to students who need to talk Wednesday.
