Teacher Accused of Touching Boy at Rec Center

Great composite sketch led police to suspect

Police in Fairfax County have arrested a teacher and charged him with taking indecent liberties with a child under the age of 15, they said Wednesday.

Dan Hegarty, 39, of Alexandria, turned himself in Tuesday, according to police.

The charge stems from an incident in the locker room of the Spring Hill Recreation Center on Nov. 10 in which a naked man allegedly touched an 8-year-old boy in a sexual manner, police said.

The child reported the incident to his parents later that evening, police said.

Hegarty was caught after police circulated a composite sketch that police said was remarkably accurate.

Hegarty taught math at Browne Academy, a private kindergarten through eighth grade school of 275 students, and he was very active in the youth hockey programs in the area, sources told News4.

There was no word on his employment status Wednesday afternoon.

Anyone that may have had similar contact with this suspect was asked to contact police at 703-691-2131.
