Teacher Admits Sending Lewd Message to Student

Teacher at Brookland Educational Campus faces dismissal

A D.C. elementary school teacher faces dismissal after admitting to sending a lewd Facebook message to a 12-year-old girl.

Jurelle Turner, 46, pleaded guilty to a misdemeanor charge of committing "certain obscene activities and conduct" in D.C. Superior Court Friday. School system officials told the Washington Post that they have begun making efforts to fire him.

Turner had been on leave from his post at Brookland Educational Campus at Bunker Hill since police launched an investigation into the incident in April. Parents at the school were notified of the situation Friday.

Turner had worked for the D.C. school system since 1994 and was a first grade teacher at Brookland. According to court documents, the recipient of the message was the older sister of one of Turner's first grade students.

Turner is due to be sentenced October 9. He faces a maximum sentence of 180 days in jail and a $1,000 fine. He may also have to register as a sex offender.
