Tanker Truck Crash Closes Dulles Greenway

Truck driver injured, fuel leaked

LEESBURG, Va. -- An overturned tanker truck forced the closure of the Dulles Greenway in both directions Monday morning at Shreve Mill Road in Leesburg, Virginia State Police said.

One eastbound lane reopened at about 8 a.m., and the rest of the lanes reopened by 9:45 a.m.

The accident occurred at about 2 a.m. Police said the truck's tank was ruptured in the crash and was leaking its load of about 7,500 gallons of fuel. Hazardous materials teams were working to contain and clean the spill.

The driver of the tanker truck, Richard Clem, 24, of Middletown, Va., was charged with one count of reckless driving. Fatigue was a factor in the crash, police said. Clem was transported by ambulance to Lansdowne Hospital for treatment of non-life threatening injuries.

The Dulles Greenway was closed in both directions between the Route 15/7 Bypass and Shreve Mill Road. The eastbound lanes of the Dulles Greenway could be accessed from Route 7 via Belmont Ridge Road.
