Taking A Beating For Burping?

Man claims deputies assaulted him in jail

Talk about the bad effects of acid reflux. A Roanoke, Va., man is suing the city and sheriff's deputies who he says beat him because he was burping while being held in jail.

Thomas Vandegrift was accused of drunk driving. He said acid reflux caused him to burp repeatedly, which annoyed the deputies.

He claims they beat him.  In his federal lawsuit he alleges excessive force, assault and battery, and a conspiracy to violate civil rights.

The sheriff's office is not commenting on the lawsuit.

On the drunk driving charge, Vandegrift pleaded no contest and received a six-month suspended sentence, a year of driving restrictions, and a $750 fine.
