Take Another Crack at the Golden Snow Shovel

Winter storm watch in effect Tuesday to Wednesday

The D.C. area got it's first significant snowfall of the season Saturday, but it wasn't enough for NBC4 meteorologist Bob Ryan to award the Golden Shovel.

Some D.C. suburbs saw several inches of snow over the weekend, but the official count at Ronald Reagan National Airport was a paltry 0.2 inches. And the National Airport count is the count that counts.

So all of those who guessed Dec. 5 for the first inch of snow in D.C. were left out in the cold.

Guessers who bet on Dec. 8 or 9, get ready. Another front is heading to the area. Could it dump the white stuff on the city and suburbs?

Much of the area will be under a National Weather Service winter storm watch Tuesday evening through Wednesday morning.

Okay, okay, maybe snow isn’t likely Tuesday night, but at the very least, the area should see some precipitation. And it will be cold. Precipitation and cold sometimes come together to make snow, right?

Tuesday night’s storm will move to our north and give the area some moderate rain, but cold air at the surface west of D.C. could mean a period of sleet and freezing rain that will cause some travel troubles by late Tuesday night, Ryan predicted. In other words: Be careful out there!

Highs Tuesday and Wednesday are expected to be in the upper 30s and lower 40s.
