Thomas Jefferson Statue Commissioned for Va. Capitol Building

Statue to be placed in new extension

A new statue of former President Thomas Jefferson will be placed in the Virginia capitol building he designed, the Richmond Times-Dispatch reported.

The statue will be bronze and full in length. It will be placed in the capitol building’s new extension.

The Virginia Capitol Foundation commissioned the statue, which will be paid for by local business leaders. Sculptor Ivan Schwartz will oversee the project. It should be completed next year.

Jefferson helped design the current statehouse, which was modeled after an ancient Roman temple in France. He also served as Virginia’s governor from 1779 to 1781.
