Suspicious Briefcase Cancels American University Event

Several campus buildings evacuated

A suspicious briefcase found in an American University campus garage led to evacuations and the cancellation of an event involving three former presidential press secretaries.

The incident occurred amidst the university's alumni weekend.  The briefcase was found in the Sports Center garage.  An explosives team was called in.  The D.C. bomb squad detonated the briefcase and found video equipment inside.

The owner of the briefcase later showed up and said it fell from the top of his car as he was driving away.

Several buildings on campus were evacuated, including the garage, Bender Arena, Mary Graydon Center and the bookstore in Butler Pavilion.

The Kennedy Political Union event, which was to be hosted by NBC's David Gregory, was canceled.  Tickets will be refunded.

University President Neil Kerwin issued a statement Saturday night.

"I sincerely regret the inconvenience caused by these events, which also occurred in a driving rain, and appreciate the patience and understanding of all alumni, parents and students," Kerwin said.
