Suspended Sentence for Man Found With Weapons Near White House

A man arrested after officers found weapons in his car near the White House in November received a suspended 12-month sentence on the condition that he complete a year of probation.

R.J. Kapheim of Davenport, Iowa, who previously pleaded guilty in D.C. Superior Court to misdemeanor charges of possessing an unregistered firearm and unlawfully possessing ammunition, must also pay $100 to D.C.'s crime victims fund, stay away from the White House and register as a gun offender in D.C.

Kapheim has been in custody since his arrest Nov. 19.

Kapheim had a loaded rifle, a 6-inch blade and 37 rounds of ammunition in his car at 16th Street and Constitution Avenue NW Wednesday afternoon. According to court documents, he approached a Secret Service officer just before 1 p.m. and said the president had called him and invited him to the White House.
