Two men charged in the kidnapping of a Clinton family over the weekend and trying to use them to rob a bank are facing possible lengthy jail sentences.
Yohannes Surafel, 24, and Yosef Tadele, 23, were ordered held without bond Tuesday. They are accused of attempting to rob a bank managed by Lucritia Hamilton by kidnapping her; her husband, James Spruill; and their two children with the intent of having Hamilton open the bank's vault.
Tadele mostly was involved in planning the crime, but he admitted driving the suspects to the Clinton home of the Spruill family and following them toward the bank, according to court documents. During that drive to the bank, Spruill got the attention of a state trooper who pulled them over and arrested Surafel, who was holding the family at gunpoint in the car early Saturday morning.
Tadele and a third suspect, who remains at large, drove past that traffic stop, realized they weren't going to cash in and parted ways, according to court documents.
The suspects are facing about 20 charges each and could be sentenced to almost 200 years in jail if convicted on all charges, according to Prince George's County State's Attorney Glenn Ivey.
