Police officers arrested two teenage suspects in an attack outside the Washington Hilton, and court documents say they were almost stopped by police prior to the assault.
Antonie Whitehead, 18, and a 17-year-old boy, both from D.C., were arrested Tuesday and charged with aggravated assault nearly a month after a group of teenagers was caught on camera outside the hotel punching, kicking and spitting on a man.
According to court documents, an officer saw Whitehead before the assault walking with a group on the 1400 block of R Street NW. The officer reported that they called for assistance to stop the group, and spotted them walking into the Hilton's driveway.
The officer lost sight of Whitehead and the group. It's unclear why the officer tried to stop them.
The group then went inside the Hilton hotel, where they were captured on surveillance cameras before the beating. Another police officer said they were able to identify from this footage.
It was about 1 a.m. when someone pointed at the victim outside the hotel and said, "that's him," according to a police report. After arguing, the man was attacked by the group of teens.
He suffered head injuries and a broken eye.
Police released video of the attack and nearly two weeks later, a 17-year-old boy was arrested and charged with aggravated assault. On Aug. 1, a 15-year-old girl was arrested and charged with simple assault.
Officers on bikes saw Whitehead and the 17-year-old suspect on the 1400 block of R Street on Tuesday and recognized the two because of numerous previous stops and arrests, court documents say.
The detective leading the assault investigation was called in and compared images from the crime scene to the suspects. Both were arrested and taken into police custody without incident, court documents say.
The case remains under investigation.
