Student Takes Hazardous Materials to School

Linganore evacuated twice, dismissed

IJAMSVILLE, Md. -- A high school in Frederick County was evacuated twice and dismissed early on Thursday because a student allegedly brought hazardous materials to campus.

School officials evacuated Linganore High School the first time after other students reported seeing the suspect student with materials that could be used to make bombs. School safety officials, Frederick County Sheriff's Office investigators and the fire marshal interviewed the suspect student and searched the school and students were allowed back inside.

After further investigation, the school was evacuated again due to suspicion that there could be more hazardous materials in the building, Frederick County Schools officials said.

Students were dismissed at 11:30 a.m. Accelerant detecting dogs swept the building Thursday afternoon.

A flammable but not explosive gel-like mixture was found in the suspected student's possession. Fire investigators called the material hazardous but have not called it bomb-making material. Investigators believe the suspect's motive was revenge targeted at other students, according to Frederick County Schools.

Afternoon and evening events at the school were canceled, but classes will resume Friday.

The student who brought the material to school was released to his parents' custody. Charges are possible. He also will face disciplinary action from the school system, school system spokeswoman Marita Loose said.
