A hunter has been hospitalized after a goose fell from the sky and knocked him unconscious, police say.

Robert Meilhammer, 51, and several other men were hunting on a private farm on Maryland's Eastern Shore Thursday afternoon. They were just about to wrap up their day of hunting when they noticed a group of geese flying overhead. The men fired at the geese, striking and killing one of the birds, Maryland Natural Resources Police said.

The dead bird then spiraled down from the sky 35 yards and struck Meilhammer in the head, police said.

The other hunters loaded Meilhammer onto an all-terrain vehicle and called police.

Meilhammer was flown to R Adams Cowley Shock Trauma Center in Baltimore and treated for a head injury. He is stable, police said.

Police believe the goose weighed between 10 and 14 pounds.
