Stray Bullet Strikes Woman in Bed in Northeast DC

The bullet grazed the woman's head, but she is expected to be ok

A stray bullet hit a woman while she was in bed in Northeast D.C.

Police say a shooting erupted outside the Fort Champlin Park Apartments near Benning Road and 44th Street NE Thursday night. Three stray bullets flew through the walls and windows of the 21-year-old victim's home, including one bullet that grazed her head while she was laying in bed.

"I didn't even know what it was, I just felt blood coming from my head so I was just trying to hurry up and get to the hospital," the victim said.

She said she was terrified and started to panic, and her mother had to calm her down.

"She said, 'mom, I'm hit, I'm hit,'" said the victim's mother, who wished to remain anonymous. "I didn't know how bad she was hit... you just see blood everywhere."

The victim didn't need any stitches for the wound and is expected to make a full recovery.

"All I could think about was, it could have been a lot worse," the victim said.

She said she feels okay, but the neighborhood is furious about the recent crime.

The mother said another shooting this week left her car riddled with bullet holes.

"This just need to stop. You're not even safe in your own home," she added.

Two other bullets hit the home on Thursday's shooting. One hit a patch of siding and went into the refridgerator in the kitchen. Another went through a wood fence and damaged the casing of the gas line.

Police were seen putting down a number of evidence markers outside the apartment where the shooting broke out.

No arrests have been made in the shooting and there is no information on a lookout.
