Standing Ovation for D.C.'s Top Teachers

Sixteen highly effective D.C. teachers honored at the Kennedy Center

Washington's top teachers will literally be given a standing ovation at the Kennedy Center on Monday evening, the Associated Press reported.

It's the first annual "Standing Ovation for D.C. Teachers" event.  The celebration honors sixteen public school teachers who have been rated "highly effective" under the school system's new ratings.

NBC anchor Jim Vance hosts the gala, which includes appearances by Education Secretary Arne Duncan, D.C. Mayor Adrian Fenty, and D.C. Council Chairman Vincent Gray, the presumptive nextmayor of D.C. Outgoing Schools Chancellor Michelle Rhee was not listed on the event's website.

Former Redskins star Darrell Green and NBC's Meet The Press host David Gregory are also slated to make an appearance.

The proceeds from the event will go to the D.C. Public Education Fund, an independent non-profit group that works to improve student achievement in the city.
