A suspect was arrested after an all-night manhunt after a Stafford, Virginia sheriff's deputy was shot while responding to a breaking-and-entering call.
Authorities got a call around 11 p.m. Tuesday about someone breaking into a house in the 100 block of Windsor Ridge Court. The 911 call came from someone who was inside the home at the time of the break-in.
When sheriff's deputies arrived, a suspect fired multiple shots, striking a deputy sheriff four times, in the hip, thigh, arm and upper chest.
"The body armor protected his upper chest and saved his life," said M.C. Morris-Moncure of the Stafford Sheriff's Office.
The sheriff's office said Wednesday evening the deputy underwent surgery for about four hours and is expected to fully recover.
His name has not been released.
The suspect, 18-year-old Joshua Anthony Sumter, was arrested about 5:45 a.m. at the Thomas Jefferson townhomes off Route 1, about a mile from the shooting scene.

Before his arrest, authorities said Sumter was considered armed and dangerous.
He is facing a charge of attempted capital murder. More charges could be coming.
Authorities said Sumter and the person or people inside the house knew each other. The investigation is continuing.
