Special Education Teacher Accused of Drinking on the Job at Elementary School in Virginia

A special education teacher was arrested at a Virginia elementary school for allegedly drinking on the job.

Brian Chamer, 46, was arrested at Mill Run Elementary School in Ashburn in the middle of the school day Thursday.

“This individual was in fact disheveled, had alcohol on his breath, so it appeared as though he was under the influence of alcohol,” Loudoun County Sheriff Mike Chapman said.

He had vodka in his personal belongings, Chapman said.

Chamer began working for Loudoun County Public Schools as a substitute in 2012. He then served as a teacher assistant and became a special education teacher in 2016. He joined Mill Run two years ago.

Chamer is on administrative leave. Other teachers have had their Virginia teaching licenses revoked for similar incidents.

“It’s actually happened before,” Chapman said. “It’s not like this is the first time.”

Parents who spoke to News4 about the arrest were stunned. One father who asked not to be identified said Chamer is a good person and a dedicated teacher.

“It’s certainly concerning for us,” Chapman said. “I think it was, really, the principal was on the ball, made sure he let us know right away what was going on.”

Chamer was charged with drinking or possessing alcoholic beverages in or on public school grounds and public intoxication, and he was released on $500 bond.
