Southern Maryland Sheriff Hit by Firetruck

Authorities in southern Maryland say the St. Mary's County sheriff was struck by a firetruck while helping at the scene of a crash in Leonardtown.

Sheriff Timothy Cameron was hit while providing care to the driver of a vehicle that crashed on Pin Cushion Road on Wednesday morning, said sheriff's office spokeswoman Jennifer Stone.

The driver had gone off the road and crashed into a tree, police said. Cameron stopped to help.

As a firetruck at the crash scene maneuvered into position, it hit Cameron, pinning him between the fire truck and the tailgate of the wrecked car.

Cameron was treated at MedStar St. Mary's Hospital and later released, Stone said. He had abrasions, but no broken bones.

The driver of the car was flown to Prince George's Hospital Center's trauma center with a leg injury.

The driver of the fire truck, 61-year-old Kenneth Scully, of Company 1 Leonardtown, was charged with negligent driving, failure to control speed to avoid a collision, and failure to exercise due care.
