Social Media Warns Stafford Co. Residents of Alligator

Officials in Stafford County, Virginia, are investigating social media reports of an alligator sighting in Aquia Creek near Willow Landing Marina, according to a report in The Free Lance-Star.

The report said the Department of Game and Inland Fisheries sent officers to the creek but were unable to confirm any reports. They plan to continue to search during routine patrols over the weekend.

The Free Lance-Star said posts on social media warned residents of an alligator sighting in Stafford, and a complaint was called in on July 17 about a sighting.

Alligators are not native to Aquia Creek. A spokesman for the DGIF said if one is found, officials will work to remove the reptile from the area.
