Smoldering cross ties outside of Union Station limited Metro traffic early Sunday morning.
Metro officials said they received a report of cross ties, wooden beams under the metal rails, which were smoldering for an unknown reason. There was an attempt to put of the beams with an extinguisher, but that was unsuccessful.
DC firefighters were able to quash the smoldering. Track service between the Judiciary Square and NoMa-Gallaudet U stations was limited to a single track while the fire was dealt with.
